A Brief Memorial Day Post!

Memorial Day is a holiday observed on the last Monday of May. It was formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. men and women who perished while in military service to their country. First enacted to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War, it was expanded after World War I to include casualties of any war or military action.

Many people observe this holiday by visiting cemeteries and memorials. Others will spend time with friends and family at BBQ's and parties. Some Americans view Memorial Day as the unofficial beginning of summer so there is generally a kind and fresh spirit in the air.

While you are out today doing whatever your favorite things may be: Please take a minute to remember those who have served and are no longer with us!

A national moment of remembrance takes place at 3 p.m. US Eastern time.

Health Nut,

Thanks for the visit and the comment. It's just a small thing to remember those that gave so much! We should do it more huh?

Hey Tamera, I've been enjoying your posts lately. Pretty deep subject matter. Wow! Anyway, I had a nice weekend with friends and family. A pretty big bash on Saturday and a BBQ on Sunday. How was your weekend?

Honorable sentiments Mr I; it is very important to remember those who have fought for democracy and freedom; History has valuable lessons. However, it is a pity that some service men and women will never have the same recognition because of the more contentious nature of recent wars. Death through the call of duty is always noble... but not always morally right...

Miss Jayne... Your comment is right on the money. Just as all soldiers don't always do the right things, Those that send soldiers to battle don't always send them for the "Right" reasons! Perhaps we should hold everyone accountable and not just the soldiers.
