Two Days of Rain! Tony Toni Tone

Somehow I missed the weather forecast. I've been busy doing my thing. Lost in my own little world. Not a lot of traveling lately but working diligently on two deals. One with a company in Canada which may or may not pan out but I'm enjoying the process. I'd heard that it could rain this week but what the heck! I didn't pay it much attention because "It never rains in Southern California!" That's what they tell me. Besides, I did some mental calculating, and I couldn't come up with the last time it has rained in my neighborhood. As best as I can remember, it sprinkled one day back in early June. Not even enough to turn on my windshield wipers in my car. So I figured the chances of rain were slim. I guess that's what I get for moving to the desert. Right?

So after 4 months of water rationing, drought, forest fires, heat, and smoke, we now get two full days of rain. Pretty heavy at times. It appears the weather people got it right this time. Not in a bad way though... I'm actually enjoying the breif change.

But I think Fall is definitely Here!

Here's a little something to listen to while you enjoy the weather in your neighborhood!

And here's a little bit of information about the group Tony Toni Tone

(pronounced Tony Tony Tony)

Tony Toni Tone, formed in 1987 in Oakland, California. They enjoyed a number of hits and good album sales for a considerable part of the nineties. The group primarily consisted of family members with brothers Dwayne and Raphael Wiggins teaming up with Cousin Timothy Christian.

The group's popularity really took off when they introduced the smash album The Revival. They became mega-stars due in part to two hit singles; the ballad ‘It Never Rains (In Southern California)' and the club dance tune 'Feels Good.'

In 1993 the group scored again with another big hit; ‘Anniversary' written by Raphael Wiggins and the bands keyboard player Carl Wheeler. It featured Gerald Albright on sax.

Somewhere around 1996 the members went on to pursue solo careers.
But that's another story to be told on another rainy day.......

Cloudy in Los Angeles - But No Sign of Rain

Positively the Los Angeles Fires of 2009!

It's always been tough for me to come home from paradise and vacation. Some years are harder than others. It's a big shock to my system to leave a sleepy casual island like Kauai and enter the big hustle and bustle of a metropolis like Los Angeles. I keep yearning for the year when I go away on "Holiday" as the Europeans say, and learn that I've entered the land of perpetual vacation and unlimited free Mai Tais.

It's even tougher when I come home and I'm faced with a cloudy skyline and the clouds aren't preceding the warm tropical sprinkles I grew so fond of in Hawaii. On the contrary, the ominous clouds in the distance don't promise a cooling seductive tropical dampening but represent acres of forestry, brush, hopes, and dreams billowing into the atmosphere.

Quite a sight to see from the ground.

And from the air!

The Fires are proving to be equally agonizing, tormenting, and heartbreaking at night!

Dare I say - It's good to be Home?

Guns for Bread?

Imagine this, you live in a crime filled neighborhood. Each night you make the rounds and lock your doors and windows and sleep with a handgun next to your bed just in case an unexpected visitor calls.

It's particularly difficult for you to sleep tonight. You're stressed out because you've just lost your job. Your boss says business is slow and he can't afford to keep you on any longer. You know that your wife's salary and your temporary unemployment pay will not be enough to cover your rent and other bills. You're unskilled and there are thousands, like you, looking for work. You lie in bed contemplating the prospects of finding a job in the next few weeks and conclude they are pretty grim. Your chest tightens. You lay still fighting back the tears when suddenly you hear a noise in your hallway. You stealthily reach for your weapon and point it towards your bedroom door. The door creaks open and there in the soft light you can make out the image of your 5 year old daughter. "Daddy I'm hungry." Your brief moment of relief after learning that it's not an unwelcome burglar is swept away when you remember that there's no food in the house. Instantly you're overcome with shame and sadness. You point the gun to your temple and for a second, you consider the short road out of this nightmare. You decide that you lack the courage for that route and instead look at your baseball hat and hooded jacket on a chair next to the bed. You consider donning both and walking down to the local 24 hour convenience store with gun in hand and helping yourself to some milk and bread. The image of you being handcuffed and taken off to jail or lying dead on a cold floor while the owner stands over you with a shotgun halts this fantasy. Instead, you comfort your child as best as you can and manage to get her to fall asleep again. You lay awake all night and stare at the ceiling trying your best not to wake your wife. The occasional tear rolls down the side of your face and into your ear. Morning comes far too quickly but you saunter out of bed with a plan. It's a quick fix and short term option but the only solution you can come up with. You get dressed, tuck your pistol into your waist band and walk down to the local Los Angeles County Sheriffs station where you find the "Gifts for Guns" program. Humbly, you turn in your weapon for a $100.00 gift card to the local grocery store. You think to yourself - This just might buy enough food to last us through the Christmas holiday!

This is a sobering fictional story (created by Intrepid) that's probably not too far from the truth for some people. This year, The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department allowed residents to anonymously relinquish firearms in return for $100 gift cards for Ralph's supermarkets, Target department stores or Best Buy electronics stores. Turning in assault rifles yields double that amount. This annual program started in 2005 after a spike in killings in the city of Los Angeles. In years past, Target and Best Buy cards were the preferred choice, with residents wanting presents for the holidays.

According to Sgt. Byron Woods of the L.A. Sheriff's department - "This year, most asked for the supermarket cards. People just don't have the money to buy the food these days."

Deputies expected to collect about 1,000 weapons this year. Authorities said 590 guns and two hand grenades were handed in during the last weekend in November, more than the total collected in any year and eclipsing last year's 387 guns.
Woods said most of the residents who turned in weapons were "family people."
"One guy said he had just got laid off from his job," Woods said. "He turned in five guns and said it would really help him to put food on the family's table."
Gun owners dropped their weapons off at a local grocery store parking lot. Deputies checked the weapons to see if they had been used in crimes, then destroyed them.

Contact your local Sheriff's/Police department if you wish to turn in a weapon for a gift.

Los Angeles Fires

Tomorrow I'll be leaving Australia and heading back to Los Angeles. So now, like many others, my focus shifts slightly to the fires in and around the city of LA. Thanks to all who have expressed concern and sent well-wishes. Thankfully all is well on my home front. Just a bit of ash and smoky air. Here are a few photos from the Sylmar fire. These shots were taken on the 405 freeway near the Mulholland pass. You can see the smoke billowing in the distance.

I'm told a cooling period is expected in the next few days. This should help the fire fighters a bit. The hot and dry temperatures as well as the strong winds have created volatile conditions throughout the area.

I'm amazed at how light the traffic is on the freeway!

And the Award goes to.........

In the category of best tasting water out of the tap.......
The Gold Medal Award goes to ?????

Ever hear of BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va? I haven't either. At least not until today.

The residents of Los Angeles have something to drink about today and it's not that the Academy Awards are over and done with. This weekend, more than 120 water sources competed in the 18Th annual Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting competition. A panel of 10 journalists and food critics sampled sparkling, tap and bottled water from 19 states and other countries, including New Zealand, Romania, Macedonia and the Philippines.

The title of best municipal water went to Los Angeles, California - we actually shared it with the town of Clearbrook, British Columbia. That means these judges determined that out of all of the contestants, Los Angeles and Clearbrook have the tastiest tap water! You'd expect that from a town named "Clearbrook" but from Los Angeles -- Come on!

What a credit nonetheless! With prices of gasoline soaring and the price of bottled water sometimes exceeding the price of the same quantity of petrol, the residents of LA have yet another reason to love it here.... "Randy Newman - I love LA"

So here's the deal: For a limited time only, I'll be saving my empty bottled water containers. And per your request and a fee, I will fill up these containers from my tap and send you the water so that you can have your own sample of some of the best tasting water. Just let me know if you want some water and I'll tell you how much money to send me. Who knows? If enough of you order my water, I can quit my day job!

Enjoy and Drink up!

"Another Perfect Day - I Love L.A"

Fifteen years ago I decided to take a chance and leave my comfortable existence on the East coast and head out to the land of "Stars and Broken Dreams." Now this move wasn't made without a bit of research. I'd visited Los Angeles and other parts of California many times before. And like most visitors, I found some of the people in LA to be quite pretentious and superficial. Others, I found to live and breathe in a culture that I found as foreign to me as a creature from a "Lost In Space" episode. Don't get me wrong, I consider myself open-minded and eager to learn and try new things, but I had a difficult time interpreting some of the vernacular. When words such as "Dude, Like, and Totally" are used more than four times in the same sentence it confuses me. "For sure For Sure!" To sum it up and to be a bit cliche, at that point I felt "LA was a nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there." Never less, I was young and adventurous so - Why not? I decided not to sell my house back east just in case things didn't work out. After all, I could always bail myself out and move back. Right? No need to say it - I'm still here so "What's up with that?"

It's simple. In the words of the Randy Newman song: " I Love LA."

(I'm trying something new here. I'm streaming the song so follow the above link if you want to hear the song)

As I was flying back into Los Angeles last Wednesday and looking out the window at the snow capped mountains, the deep blue Pacific ocean, and the rolling lush green Hollywood hills, I decided; You can find creepy people just about anywhere but it's hard to replace this scenery and the southern California climate. 65-75 degree weather in January? Hard to beat. And we're having a colder than normal winter. Here's a shot I took on Wednesday followed by a few I took the week before. Sorry, I've overplayed the snow capped mountains but it's novel out here.

I hope you enjoy them.

Here's a Bonus shot. Sunrise or Sunset?
