When Is National Doughnut (Donut) Day? Free Donuts!

National Doughnut Day is celebrated the first Friday of June each year.  That's June 6, 2014 this year. This tradition stems from the Doughnut Day event established by The Salvation Army in 1938 to honor the men and women who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I.  So this is actually a - no joke -patriotic day.  Most American Donut shops will be offering free donuts throughout the day!  If you find a shop that isn't offering free donuts, walk in and ask them why they are being unpatriotic!  Demand a Donut and declare that it is your patriotic right!

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts will be offering a Free Doughnut at most (if not all) of their locations.

I couldn't wait....   So I bought a box yesterday.

A few of them were casualties and didn't make it home!

Sacrifices have to be made!

If you can't make it to a doughnut shop today, or just want to try your luck making some at home, here are a few great recipes:

The End of Illness!

The End of Illness by David B. Agus, MD..... Something to ponder!

Will I die of cancer or some other sickness, disease, or medical disorder? Will I get hit by a car and die of "complications?" Will I die in an airplane accident, or meet my end in some other tragic manner?

How many of you have asked these questions? What if you could eliminate the "get sick and die" option from consideration?

I'm asking: "Could we possibly have reached a point in our evolution where medicine, technology, education, and common sense have all come together to end illness?"

This is certainly a question worth pondering so I just picked up the book: The End of Illness, by David B. Agus, MD because I want to know!

Check out this clip from the Daily Show with Jon Stewart:

Thanks Dr. David Agus for writing this book!

Now all of you bloggers sitting behind your computer for hours at a time....

"Get UP And MOve!"

Here's wishing everyone happiness, health, and an end to your illness!

Krispy Kreme Burger??? That's just sick!

Face it, Krispy Kreme Donuts are pretty good.

I like the glazed chocolate cake donuts slightly heated, with a glass of milk or a cup of coffee. Dunking the donuts in the coffee is absolutely heavenly. Sometimes, it's even worth a second donut. Another one of my K.K. favorites is their Blueberry Fritter. Simply Delicious!

But this is absolutely disgusting!

Horrible! Shameless! and Contemptible!

I dare you to watch this.........

A Krispy Kreme Burger? with Bacon and Cheese?

That's Unbelievably Wrong!

Personally, I've never had one. But everyone knows it's wrong because
If you're gonna eat one of those.....

You'd better wash it down with one of these.......

Just makes sense. Forget the calorie count!

Here's the nutritional information for Krispy Kreme donuts: KKnutritionalinfo.

Beer, Beef Patties, bacon, and cheese are extra!

Just a small cafe!

I've discovered a new hip cafe in Darling Harbor, (Sydney) Australia. It's really not that hip but the owners are nice, the food is good, and the coffee is great! What more could you ask for? The name of the cafe is Pulse. It's just off Union Street near the intersection of Union/Pyrmont. Up the street from the legendary Pyrmont Bridge Hotel.

They specialize in a healthier menu. I usually have a breakfast sandwich made with spelt bread, avocado, and ham. But I just love their "Flat White" coffee!

So if you find yourself in the neighborhood. Stop by and have one. They're delicious!

Which direction am I headed?

I've been on the road again and today I flew home from Denver, Colorado. So in a geographical sense, I guess I was headed West. But that's not quite the question I'm really asking. Please bear with me for a few minutes......

While in Denver today, I picked up a copy of a USA Today newspaper that someone had left around the gate area. And in the Life section, there was an article titled "Which direction are you going, and for how long?" By Craig Wilson. This instantly caught my attention so I read on.

In the article, Craig talks about a friend of his who is in her 90's. He uses his discussion about her to segway into the topics of longevity and health. The focal point of these topics is a book titled "The Blue Zone" written by Dan Buettner, a journalist/researcher. Buettner describes areas in the world where people live the longest as "Blue Zones." As I read this, I recalled an article that I had read in the past that described the island of Okinawa, Japan as having more centenarians (people over 100 years old) than any other place in the world. So curiously I read on, hoping to find some secret clue to my own personal fountain of youth.

I patiently read on as Craig rambled and pitched a free website: "bluezones.com." So tonight as I rushed into the house I couldn't wait to log on-line to check it out. Turns out they offer what's called a Vitality Compass. This is a specially constructed quiz that will tell you when you're going to die. Well, not exactly.... But it does provide some insight into your future based on your current habits. I broke down and took the quiz and tried my best to be honest. I think I may have stretched the truth just a minor bit but mostly, I was honest. The compass offered the following information:

  1. Biological age
  2. Life expectancy
  3. Healthy Life expectancy
  4. Blue Zone years

Turns out my biological age is about 11 years younger than my actual age and my life expectancy is 93.3 years. According to the compass, I can expect to be healthy until I'm about 81 years and then my health may suffer the last 12 years or so of my life.

So there you have it. If you're curious and want some entertainment, give it a shot. Something to think about. The site is loaded with useful information. Contrary to what the Vitality Compass says about me, I happen to feel like I've been headed "South" for the last few years. This just might be the right inspiration to change directions to a Northerly heading and live better and longer. Follow this link if you want to try it: Blue Zones

Happy Navigating!

Eat This Not That

Why are some people so smart and I'm not? Ever ask yourself that question? Well today I did. Again! But for a different reason this time.

I've subscribed to Men's Health magazine for years and for some silly reason, I keep renewing the subscription. It's silly because it seems to me that the information just keeps getting recycled. I know it's not entirely true but I feel like I just keep reading a repeat of the same stuff. After all, there must be a finite level of information. So at some point, they've got to run out of workout routines and food that's good for you to eat and things you can do to stimulate your sex partner right? Furthermore, I generally don't get through all of my magazines. So I sometimes just leave them on the airplane as a gift for someone who is looking for some cheap (free) reading material. - Remember when the airlines used to provide you with magazines and newspapers? Now you're lucky to get some peanuts or pretzels.

I just feel like I could keep my past issues for 4 years and just keep rereading those issues over and over again. My memory is good but it's short so by the time I get back to the beginning of the cycle, It would be like learning new stuff all over again. In the long run I'll be just as knowledgeable as if I continued to subscribe. And if I invest the subscription money wisely, who knows, maybe I can be the next Warren Buffett. What do you think?

Okay, all sarcasm aside, I think I'd miss a few things if I cancelled my subscription. For one, I really enjoy reading the "Jimmy the bartender" series. I'll elaborate on Jimmy in a later post. I also enjoy browsing the "Eat This Not That" articles. But I'm always amazed at how I seem to like the stuff that's on the "Not That" side better.

For example:

Given the choice of ordering a Tuna Sandwich from Subway or a double roast beef sandwich from Subway which would you think is better?

For me, the choice is simple. I'm trying to stay away from red meat (when I can) and I'm thinking fish is better for you with the Omegas and such so it's an easy choice. Go with the Tuna Right?

Wrongo fish breath! According to the guide, you should eat the Roast Beef. (click for details)

Eat This

6-inch Double Roast Beef Sub

Even with twice the meat--and double the protein--this sandwich still has only a fraction of the fat found in the tuna.

Not This

6-inch Tuna Sub

Gloppy mayo-based tuna salad sends this sandwich's fat counts skyrocketing.

See what I mean? I'm just destined to be not as smart as some of you out there. Maybe you'll take pity on me and comment on my site!

Thanks for reading....
