Krispy Kreme Burger??? That's just sick!

Face it, Krispy Kreme Donuts are pretty good.

I like the glazed chocolate cake donuts slightly heated, with a glass of milk or a cup of coffee. Dunking the donuts in the coffee is absolutely heavenly. Sometimes, it's even worth a second donut. Another one of my K.K. favorites is their Blueberry Fritter. Simply Delicious!

But this is absolutely disgusting!

Horrible! Shameless! and Contemptible!

I dare you to watch this.........

A Krispy Kreme Burger? with Bacon and Cheese?

That's Unbelievably Wrong!

Personally, I've never had one. But everyone knows it's wrong because
If you're gonna eat one of those.....

You'd better wash it down with one of these.......

Just makes sense. Forget the calorie count!

Here's the nutritional information for Krispy Kreme donuts: KKnutritionalinfo.

Beer, Beef Patties, bacon, and cheese are extra!

Philadelphia Cheese Steaks!

Getting back to my Planes, Trains, and Automobiles trek..... (Continued from there)

After spending the morning shopping and touring in the Big Apple, it was time to head off to my next destination. From New York City, it was a nice train ride from Grand Central Station through New Jersey and down to Philadelphia. It was pretty relaxing reading the newspaper and listening to music on my MP3 player. I'll be honest with you, I had two things on my mind during the train ride:

  • Checking into the Doubletree Hotel (Doubletree Hotel Philadelphia) and collecting my Cookies.

  • Getting cleaned up and heading out to find a Philly Cheesesteak!

    1. The check-in went quickly and before I knew it I had munched down my delicious cookies (Yum!), cleaned up, and was ready to head out for dinner. (You've got to eat those cookies while they're warm)

The caloric splurge didn't bother me much because I decided a good way to burn off a few calories was to forgo the taxicab ride and walk to my next culinary delight. So I headed left out of the hotel entrance and walked towards South Street.

Back in the day when I visited Philadelphia on a more regular basis, South Street was the place to go. I was surprised at how the environment had changed a bit. Instead of a younger, hipper, livelier crowd, there seemed to be a low-keyed more local and older (30s -40s) crowd. People didn't appear to be just hanging out. They seemed to be headed somewhere special or casually strolling and window shopping. I was pleasantly surprised when I passed by an unfamiliar but interesting site so I snapped a few photos.

A collection of tile, glassware, bicycle parts, bottles, cans and a variety of many other items. Definitely an artist's rendering of something - I speculated.

It was dark and the place was closed but I later learned that this fine work of art was Philadelphia's Magic Gardens - 1020 South Street, Philadelphia, PA 19147 -sometimes referred to as PMG. After doing some searching on the Internet...

      Here's what I learned:

Philadelphia's Magic Gardens is a folk art environment, gallery space, and nonprofit organization that showcases the work of mosaicist Isaiah Zagar. Located at the site of Zagar's largest public mosaic installation, the Magic Gardens includes a fully mosaiced indoor gallery and a massive outdoor labyrinthine mosaic sculpture. The installation, primarily consisting of found objects and contributions from the community, covers half a city block with myriads of tile, texture, and color. A walk through the labyrinth will reveal sculptures from Latin America and Asia, bicycle wheels from local South Street shop Via Bicycles, Zagar's hand-made tiles, and mirrors of every shape and size.

So with all of the artsy - fartsy stuff done, it was time to get down to some real business. The business of finding an awesome cheesesteak. I had really talked this treat up and I was looking forward to the encounter. As I remembered, there were two competing places that always got my business. Jim's Steaks and Ishkabibble's. I wondered if either was still around. After walking a few blocks on South street I crossed paths with two local young ladies who were headed to the Whole Foods Market. Just on a whim I asked: "Where's the best place to get a Cheesesteak?" Their reply was surprisingly chatty. One suggested I try Jim's Steaks..... (score I thought, it is still open)

Just out of curiosity, I asked about Ishkabibble's. The other gal jumped in.... "Oh that's my favorite place to go. I usually send tourists to Jim's for the atmosphere and experience but frankly, I always go to Ishkabibble's."

Interesting - I thought. As fate would have it, I walked by Jim's Steaks first. The place was jumping. Steaks, peppers, and onions were on the grill. A soft smoke from the meat filled the air. There was a line formed inside against the wall and people were hustling upstairs in search of seating.

      Jim's Steaks - South Street

Just to compare, I walked a few more steps and crossed the street to find Ishkabibble's.

Things were a lot more subdued at Iskabibble's. There were a few people seated inside enjoying dinner and a short line at a walk up order station facing the street.
I decided to go with the action and headed back to Jim's. I walked in and after a short wait started my order. My order of Steak, Onions, and Swiss cheese, was loaded expertly on a bun and was served up quickly with an equal portion of Philadelphia Attitude!
      No problem,
      I smiled....
I'll take a Heineken with that order too - PLEASE!

I sauntered upstairs, located a seat, added some pepper to my creation and proceeded to partake of this local treasure.

Not bad I thought. I'll rate it 7/10 points on the taste... the meat was a tad bit chewy...

But I'll give the experience an 8/10 points.

Just for the record - The next time I'll try Ishkabibble's.

      Here's what

Catherine A. from Philadelphia writes on Yelp; 09/03/2009 about Ishkabibble's:

Whenever a tourist stops me in the vicinity of South Street and asks me where the best cheesesteak is, I send them here. Everything I've ever had from here is delicious. My personal favorite is the chicken cheesesteak, with american and fried onions, but I love their sweet potato fries, I love their cheesesteaks, I love their Gremlins, I even love their veggie burgers. I especially love watching the line for Jim's across the street as people stand by for a sub-par steak and I order, receive and eat my steak before they get in the door. Makes me smile every time.

Schucks. Wish I had read her review prior to my trip.........

Thanks for reading. Watch for my next stop. Gettysburg, PA.

New York City, Central Park, The Dakota, and John Lennon

So the plane trip to New York was nice and uneventful. This time of year it's possible to catch many of the afternoon thunderstorms building in the mid-west. Fortunately, the early departure out of LAX meant we missed the turbulent air. Shortly after my arrival into JFK, I was reminded of a comment made by a friend about a year ago. He joked about his 4 day stay in New York City. "Believe it or not" he snickered "I spent more in ground transportation fees in those 4 days than I spent on my plane ticket from Los Angeles to New York."

I thought about his comment every time I reached into my pocket to pay cab fare. $50 seems to be about the flat rate from Kennedy airport to anywhere in Manhattan. And every other time I jumped in a cab (think dinner, shopping, touring) it was roughly 7-8 bucks. I did manage to take the subway system twice. That ran about 2 dollars each way but who's counting? The economy needs stimulating right? And maybe some of that stimulus money will end up back in my pocket.

Anyway, I parked at the New York Hilton (vice the W where I stayed last October) for my stay this time just to take in a different part of the city. It's just a few short blocks away from Central Park and is noted for many things. A friend pointed out to me that it's where Malcolm X spent the night before he was assassinated. Yikes! I said. Remembering that Ronald Reagan was shot just outside the Washington Hilton and Towers. (Now I'm thinking about my Hilton Honors Card and how many times I've used the Hilton brand). I'll be looking over my shoulder each time I walk out of the hotel from now on.

Oh well, seems I need to do more blogging and less thinking. This thinking stuff can be stressful. The Hilton was fine. But given the option and all costs being equal, I'll pick the "W" over the Hilton for my place to stay in New York. The rooms at the "W" were just a bit more luxurious and I liked the boutique feeling. On second thought, there is a Doubletree in Time Square. You know how I feel about their cookies!

      So anyway,

My first day in town I walked up to Central Park West and strolled by The Dakota. I know, I'm headed down this morbid assassination/killing trail but bear with me, it will be short and I'll be moving on to something more lively in my next post.

The Dakota, constructed from October 25, 1880 to October 27, 1884, is an apartment building located on the northwest corner of 72ND Street and Central Park West in New York City. The architectural firm of Henry Janeway Hardenbergh was commissioned to do the design for Edward Clark, head of the Singer Sewing Machine Company. The firm also designed the Plaza Hotel. (Home of - YOU Guessed it - The wonderful and dearest Eloise!)

"According to popular legend, the Dakota was so named because at the time it was built, the Upper West Side of Manhattan was sparsely inhabited and considered as remote as the Dakota Territory." It is more likely that the building was named "The Dakota" because of Clark's fondness for the names of the new western states and territories. High above the 72ND Street entrance, the figure of a Dakota Indian keeps watch. The Dakota was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, and was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1976."

      The Dakota Circa 1890

Some of you will remember the building is probably best known as the home of former Beatle John Lennon and his wife, Yoko Ono, starting in 1973, and was also the location of Lennon's murder by Mark David Chapman on December 8, 1980. As of 2009, Ono still has an apartment in the building. Some other famous residents of the building:

Lauren Bacall - actress, Leonard Bernstein - composer/conductor, Roberta Flack - singer, Judy Garland - actress , John Madden - football player, coach and announcer, Neil Sedaka - singer, and Boris Karloff - actor.

Just across the street and a very short walk away is Central Park and the location of the Strawberry Fields memorial.

Every year, Ono marks the anniversary of Lennon's death with a now-public pilgrimage to the memorial.

That's all for now. Stay tuned for more........

      Double Tree Cookies! Yum!

A while back I posted "Eat This Not That." where I rambled on about a few things and ended with a question on whether you should eat a Tuna Sub or Roast Beef Sub.

Today I've got another dilemma for you.... How many of you are cookie eaters? If you like cookies, then I'm sure you've had the chance to sample one or two at Subway. What about Doubletree Hotels? Have you tried their cookies?

This past week I found myself in a position to enjoy cookies from both Subway and Doubletree. So out of curiosity, I decided to check out the details. I couldn't find a comparison for these cookies on the "Eat This Not That!" site. But for other cookies, follow the link.

      Eat this - Cookies

So I decided to do my own research. Here's what I found:

Subway Cookies- Last week I went for the three for $0.99 special. I opted for one of each of the CHOCOLATE CHUNK, WHITE CHIP MACADAMIA NUT, and PEANUT BUTTER. Believe it or not, I only ate the Chocolate Chunk. I may get around to the others later. (smile) But for now, I'll just compare the Chocolate Chunk to the Doubletree Cookie.

      Chocolate Chunk

      Calories 210
      Protein 2 g
      Carbohydrates 29 g
      Cholesterol 10 mg
      Fat 10 g

      Doubletree Cookie

      Calories 310
      Protein 4.4 g
      Carbohydrates 38 g
      Cholesterol 35 mg
      Fat 18 g

Now for some more news. The Subway cookies weigh in at about 1.5 ounces while the Doubletree cookies tip the scale at close to 2.3 ounces. So the DT cookie is a bit larger.

If you look at the numbers and you compare one cookie to one cookie, it appears that the Subway cookie would be the best bet.

Guess what? You're probably right but I'm going for the Doubletree Cookie every time! They are absolutely delicious! Made with Ghirardelli chocolate chips and walnuts, I think they are scrumptious. I'll be happy to run a few extra miles or spend some extra time in the gym but keep those warm cookies coming!

      Order Doubletree Cookies

Perhaps it's the special chocolate, or the walnuts, butter, or the cinnamon. But I love them! Good thing I only have them about twice a year. Unfortunately, I've just located a recipe on line. I think I'll try to make a batch. If you like em too..... Here's the link for the recipe: Doubletree Cookie Recipe.

      I'm off to the gym!
